The 15 minute opening range defines who has control after the most liquid & information-dense part of the session
Your job is not to predict direction inside the range
Let price show acceptance or rejection
Trade continuation from value, not impulse
In trading terms, value is not a price level you like — it’s where the market is most comfortable doing business
The first 15 minutes define initiative vs acceptance
Anchoring VWAPs to opening high & low provides you sound framing
Did price expand first?
Did value follow or reject that expansion?
1. Define the Opening Range (OR)
Use 9:30-9:45 EST & mark opening range high (ORH) & opening range low (ORL)
No trades yet since this is information gathering, not prediction
2. Anchor VWAPs
Once the first meaningful daily high or low forms after the OR (first 15 minutes)
High-anchored VWAP (HAVWAP) is the anchor from the session high once it’s set
Low-anchored VWAP (LAVWAP) is the anchor from the session low once it’s set
These anchors shouldn’t be pre-anchored at the open since they matter only after expansion occurs
3. Bias Determination (this is the actual rule)
Bullish if price holds above ORH, pullbacks find support at LAVWAP & HAVWAP stays overhead resistance until broken
RSI holds mostly above 40-45 (no sustained bearish regime)
Only take longs
Best entries occur on the pullback into LAVWAP, ORH retest + hold & VWAP reclaim after shallow dip
Bearish if price holds below ORL, rallies fail into HAVWAP, LAVWAP remains below price & RSI capped near 55-60
Only take shorts
Best entries occur on HAVWAP rejection, ORL retest + failure & VWAP loss after weak bounce
4. No-Trade Conditions (this is critical)
Do nothing if price chops between ORH & ORL, AVWAPs flatten & overlap, RSI oscillates tightly around 50 & expansion occurs, but price immediately re-centers
This is balance & your edge collapses here
Opening range defines who acted first
AVWAPs track where real size is trapped or comfortable
You’re aligning structure (OR), value (AVWAP) & momentum regime (RSI) —
that’s 3 independent confirmations
It fails on low-volume holidays, macro news days (CPI, FOMC, etc) when VWAPs get distorted & strong trend days where price never pulls back to AVWAP
On those days, OR breakout continuation beats mean-reversion entries
Improve entries by adding this filter
If price breaks ORH/ORL, but cannot hold above/below it for 3 consecutive 5 minute closes, stand down until AVWAP interaction occurs
This removes a lot of false breakouts
This is a daily decision framework
OR defines intent
AVWAPs define acceptance
You trade only when those 2 agree
Here’s a daily checklist you can run once per session & then mechanically follow - no interpretation mid-trade
Opening Range (OR) — mark high & low, observe & wait for breakout
Pre-Market (optional, but recommended)
☐ No major scheduled macro catalyst during RTH
☐ Overnight range not extreme relative to last 5 sessions
☐ Prior day closed outside value (trend bias) or inside value (balance bias noted)9:30-9:45 EST OR
☐ Mark OR High (ORH)
☐ Mark OR Low (ORL)
☐ Do nothing until 9:45 closes
☐ Note if opening volume is above/average/belowExpansion check (after 9:45)
☐ Has price broken ORH or ORL?
☐ Yes → continue
☐ No → stand down until breakDirection of First Expansion
☐ Above ORH → potential long day
☐ Below ORL → potential short dayAVWAPs
☐ Identify first session high & low after OR breakAnchors
☐ HAVWAP from high
☐ LAVWAP from low
☐ AVWAPs sloping, not flat
☐ Price interacting cleanly (not chopping through both)
Bias Confirmation — enter the trade
Long-Only Day (only look for longs)
☐ Price accepts above ORH (≥3 × 5 minute closes)
☐ Pullbacks hold LAVWAP
☐ HAVWAP overhead until broken
☐ RSI mostly >45Short-Only Day (only look for shorts)
☐ Price accepts below ORL (≥3 × 5 minute closes)
☐ Rallies fail at HAVWAP
☐ LAVWAP unused below
☐ RSI mostly <55Entry Conditions (all must be true)
☐ Price at AVWAP or ORH/ORL retest
☐ Rejection or hold candle (no middle-of-range entries)
☐ Entry candle closes with direction
☐ Distance to invalidation ≤1R
Manage the Trade
Stop Rules (non-negotiable)
Stop goes just beyond AVWAP, OR beyond ORH/ORL failure & OR last swing (whichever is tightest & logical)
If AVWAP flips sides, trade is invalid
Profit Management
☐ First scale at prior high/low or range extensionTrail remainder using AVWAP slope, OR midpoint & higher low/lower high
Exit fully if AVWAP flattens, RSI diverges, or price re-enters OR
No-Trade Conditions
☐ Price inside ORH–ORL
☐ AVWAPs overlapping or flat
☐ RSI chopping around 50
☐ Volume collapsing after expansionPost-Trade (mandatory)
☐ Did price respect OR?
☐ Did AVWAP act as support/resistance?
☐ Did I violate bias rules?
In summary, no OR break + no AVWAP interaction = no trade (no edge → no trade)
Avoid News Events because volatility can be unpredictable
Confirm, Don’t Chase so wait for strong confirmation to avoid fake-outs
Keep it Simple so focus on trading only the first reliable breakout of the range
While 15 minutes is common, some traders use 5 minutes or 30 minute ranges, but the principles are the same
